Warhammer the Old World: We Painted Classic Snotlings, Goblins, and Orcs out of the 90s

We got to do a bunch of these little buggers. I’m an O and G fan and am always happy to see any kind of Greenskin in the studio.

Painting Bretonnians with Freehand Heraldry, Designs, and Banners

With Warhammer the Old World, we’re getting a lot of Bretonnian army painting. This army stood out from most other Bretonnian commissions though. This was because the client asked us to do a great deal of freehand painting. This was both for heraldry on the VIPs and caparison patterns on the mounted Grail Knights (we called them ‘horse blankets’).

This was unusual because freehand is an expensive, added service. In this case it came to a third of the budget. For the rank and file minis though, transfers were used for the shield design heraldry.

The newer Bretonnian models were good to work with. The older plastic injection kits, and some of the metal ones like the grail pilgrims, however, are still excellent.

Leaving out a few outliers like the old Bretonnian damsels, the sculpts worked together well for an coherent Bretonnian army.

These were all painted to Exhibition Quality. The freehand designs and heraldry were an additional fee.

One Page Rules (OPR) Wood Elves - 3D Printing and Painting an Army

We landed a commission to print-and-paint a large Wood Elves army for One Page Rules.

I quite like One Page Rules, particularly Grimdark Firefight and Grimdark Future. However, we don't often get to work with OPR's own miniatures.

Here, A client sent us a bunch of his WoodElf 3D files (STLs) for us to print and paint on his behalf.

These work well as proxies for the old Games Workshop Wood Elves Army. The detail on the sculpts is not quite as advanced, but it's getting there. Some figures, like the Eternal Guardian Ancient, are quite excellent.

Rangers Of Shadow Deep - Some 3D Print-and-Paint Miniature Painting Service

Rangers of Shadowdeep is a cooperative or solo wargame by Joseph McCullough. He also did Frostgrave. If you haven't tried Frostgrave, I recommend it.

Rangers of Shadowdeep is a solo wargame slash group game against the environment. In it, rangers patrol a kingdom's border against the monsters that come with an encroaching cloud of darkness. The game has a bunch of scenarios you can play through. I've not played the game yet myself but the rules look promising.

Flames Of War Hungarians: Historical Wargame Miniature Painting Commission

One of the less-well known Axis armies. A mix of domestic units and German gear.

Easy to forget the Hungarians were on the Axis side.

To be fair, VictorOrban is kinda on the Axis side now....

Painting Star Wars Imperial Assault: Remember These?

I was mad excited when we first started getting Imperial Assault miniatures to paint. Besides the West End Game Star Wars metal figures which we’d get from time to time (which looked terrible), I believe, Imperial Assault were the first Star Wars plastics of known characters and infantry that we had seen.

I a bit surprised when Star Wars Legion came out shortly afterwards with very similar sculpts, though somewhat improved (especially the stormtroopers. I imagine those are as hard to sculpt as they can be to paint). I felt that Imperial Assault hadn't really finished its day in the sun.

As such, I was quite pleased when a client recently asked us if we could paint his Imperial Assault collection.

I like to think we did them a lot more justice this time around than we could have back when they first came out. These were all painted to Exhibition Quality.

We painted a ‘90s Vintage High Elf Army for Warhammer the Old World

This was a fun one! The client’s key request was to get this army painted in the style shown in the 4th and 5th Generation High Elves Warhammer Armies books.

In addition to just straight forward painting, there were some other concerns we had to sort in order to get that proper retro look. Namely banners, old school green flock, freehand painting.

We could scan the army books or following parts of art on the boxes. There were some units like the Swordmasters of Hoeth, which required some research online. While the images we found were low resolution, we retouched the pictures for the banner to be clearer. Figuring out the shapes and elvish ruins became an easy process with existing reference materials.

With trial and error, we managed to recreate the banner designs. After scaling them to the right size, we made metal banners by cutting metal sheets and then put it all together.

The decals themselves are printed on special clear transfer paper, which we printed on using our office InkJet printer. 3 main coats of clear lacquer at 15 minutes apart was required after. Because the banners are primed in white, the transfers are very easily visible.

Printing and Painting The Deep Citadel From The Kingdom of Saxonia Set

Some terrain we 3D printed and painted. Here, the client sent us his Kingdom of Saxonia files for us to 3D print, on his behalf, for his personal use. We 3D filament printed the Deep Citadel. It’s a large, fun, terrain piece that looks quite a bit like a fortress from a certain movie…

While it was still unpainted, we used it for a Mordheim battle (I lost, as usual). It’s a fun piece with lots of places to stick minis.

Bolt Action: Painting a 28mm British Airborne Army

Here we painted quite a few Late War, British Airborne. These are by Warlord Games and are chiefly metal minis.

The painting was straightfoward. What wasn’t was making sure things were done to historical accuracy.

There’s plenty of detail in Fantasy and Science Fiction minis. However, its often exaggerated, or sculpted to catch the eye. It isn’t so with Historical wargame minis. With them, small pack of bandages is just a small pack of bandages.

Our way around this is:

• to make a list of all the gear (water bottles to bayonets)

• find pictures of them

• put them together in a guide

The painters then work off the guide.

We also watched A Bridge Too Far. If you were to walk into the studio and see a bunch of us watching movies, it still counts as work.
