Warlord Games - Painting the Afrika Korps from Bolt Action - Warlord Games

DAK are probably my favorite WW2 miniature army. They’ve got a lot of the cool gear; their palette is brighter; and this history of Rommel vs Auchinleck vs Montgomery in the North African theater is always a great read.

These are Warlord Games miniatures. We did them as is, except that they all have new antennae. We 3D designed and printed new ones (with a holder so they didn’t just fall off). Then, wee magnetized them.

Painting Snakebite Orks: Blue and Green Orks, Vehicles, and a Stompa!

Painting Bretonnians with Freehand Heraldry, Designs, and Banners

With Warhammer the Old World, we’re getting a lot of Bretonnian army painting. This army stood out from most other Bretonnian commissions though. This was because the client asked us to do a great deal of freehand painting. This was both for heraldry on the VIPs and caparison patterns on the mounted Grail Knights (we called them ‘horse blankets’).

This was unusual because freehand is an expensive, added service. In this case it came to a third of the budget. For the rank and file minis though, transfers were used for the shield design heraldry.

The newer Bretonnian models were good to work with. The older plastic injection kits, and some of the metal ones like the grail pilgrims, however, are still excellent.

Leaving out a few outliers like the old Bretonnian damsels, the sculpts worked together well for an coherent Bretonnian army.

These were all painted to Exhibition Quality. The freehand designs and heraldry were an additional fee.

Dragonlance Painting: We Built a Diorama for a Ral Partha Red Dragon of Krynn

Dragonlance was one of those things my parents would never have let me read if they had known what it was about. Not because they had kept up with the Satanic Panic around Dungeons & Dragons. They didn't even know what D&D was. It was because Dragonlance would have seemed obviously too fun.

They were of the opinion that I should be reading Dickens -- the kind of stuff forced on kids by parents who hadn't read Dickens themselves. My sister, who liked Dickens but hated me, encouraged this.

Thus it was that it wasn't till my teen years that I could return to things that were obviously fun. By then though we’d moved back to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka in the 90s was quite the cultural backwater. You couldn’t find Dragonlance in bookstores (though you did find Dickens). I only encountered it when a friend from New Zealand lent a couple of books - and taught me about this thing called Dungeons and Dragons. That was in 1993.

It wasnt until I went to college in the US that I finally came across it again. By then, however, it had already peaked and gone. There were so many other things in those expanding early days of mass Internet access to steal a young person’s attention - like White Wolf games, Shadowrun, and 3rd Edition.

As such, I was surprised and pleased when we were asked to paint a Ral Partha Red Dragon of Kryn for him and put it in a little diorama. Always nice to be asked to work on a piece of the D&D heritage. I'm also always a sucker for a diorama.

Here's the one we put together. The main components were 3D printed. The flames were sculpted, and the acrylic case was put together by hand.

One Page Rules (OPR) Wood Elves - 3D Printing and Painting an Army

We landed a commission to print-and-paint a large Wood Elves army for One Page Rules.

I quite like One Page Rules, particularly Grimdark Firefight and Grimdark Future. However, we don't often get to work with OPR's own miniatures.

Here, A client sent us a bunch of his WoodElf 3D files (STLs) for us to print and paint on his behalf.

These work well as proxies for the old Games Workshop Wood Elves Army. The detail on the sculpts is not quite as advanced, but it's getting there. Some figures, like the Eternal Guardian Ancient, are quite excellent.

Rangers Of Shadow Deep - Some 3D Print-and-Paint Miniature Painting Service

Rangers of Shadowdeep is a cooperative or solo wargame by Joseph McCullough. He also did Frostgrave. If you haven't tried Frostgrave, I recommend it.

Rangers of Shadowdeep is a solo wargame slash group game against the environment. In it, rangers patrol a kingdom's border against the monsters that come with an encroaching cloud of darkness. The game has a bunch of scenarios you can play through. I've not played the game yet myself but the rules look promising.

We were asked to do some 3D printing and miniature painting service for some figures for the scenarios. Here's what we did.

About Car Wars:

In the game, players design and build their own vehicles using a variety of components such as engines, tires, weapons, and armor. Flames Of War Hungarians: Historical Wargame Miniature Painting Commission

One of the less-well known Axis armies. A mix of domestic units and German gear.

Easy to forget the Hungarians were on the Axis side.

Painting Star Wars Imperial Assault: Remember These?

I was mad excited when we first started getting Imperial Assault miniatures to paint. Besides the West End Game Star Wars metal figures which we’d get from time to time (which looked terrible), I believe, Imperial Assault were the first Star Wars plastics of known characters and infantry that we had seen.

I a bit surprised when Star Wars Legion came out shortly afterwards with very similar sculpts, though somewhat improved (especially the stormtroopers. I imagine those are as hard to sculpt as they can be to paint). I felt that Imperial Assault hadn't really finished its day in the sun.

As such, I was quite pleased when a client recently asked us if we could paint his Imperial Assault collection.

I like to think we did them a lot more justice this time around than we could have back when they first came out. These were all painted to Exhibition Quality.
