40k: Tyranid Hive Fleet Tiamat Painted with Colorshifting Paints"

The client’s request was to use Cyan Blue and Silver in a manner that shifts color using color shifting paint. The inspiration for the scheme came from the fact that these Tyranids descend from Hive Fleet Tiamat.

The basing is exactly as you see it. We used reflective film of the same kind used on mirrors. Didn’t quite end up the same, but you can see the reflected feet if you look closely!

Kill Team - Hivestorm: Painting Up Some Vespid Stingwings (40k)

We had the opportunity to paint up just one half of the Kill Team - Hivestorm minis, the Vespid Stingwings and their drones.

These were very unusual. The client wanted a metallic bronze look with a patina corrosion effect. We did the bronze corrosion look with an oil wash.

We also did honeycomb-style basing. It’s disturbing to look at. I love it.

40k: Standard Quality Grey Knights with Red Bamboo Bases

Some Grey Knights we painted at Standard Quality. You’ll notice the very unusual basing! The client asked us to 3D print some plant files, a lot of which was bamboo. Bit of a challenge to pack (all those leaves sticking out!) but the look is very distinctive. Definitely an army opponents will remember playing.

Ork Tinboyz! We Painted Classic, 40k 2nd Edition Miniatures along with the new Red Gobbo Tinboy

Warhammer 40k - We Painted Some Drukhari In Showcase Quality!

We got to do a bit of Dark Eldar Miniature Painting Service, or Drukhari, as we're supposed to call them now... I love the Dark Eldar. They are extremely classy sculpts.They also have great stock colors going for them. The contrast of cooler tones and bright highlightcolors make good contrast. The sharp, hard edges accent the smooth, graceful lines.

These sculpts are more than ten years old and they still look excellent. It speaks for the quality of the sculpting - and the team that designed them. I hope we'll be painting these Dark Eldar for quite a bit more before they finally get new sculpts.

We painted up some Adeptus Titanicus miniatures!

This was a fun little army of Horus Heresy Adeptus Titanicus figures we got to paint. The color schemes were nice and bold. I like how they present as a group. The client picked schemes that gave an even balance of brighter and darker tones. I think this makes for a strong overall composition, both for individual figures and as a force on the table.

Warhammer 40k: Painting Fulgrim – Daemon Primarch of Slaanesh, and his Traitor Bro Buddies

40k: Painting the Death Korps of Krieg Army Box (With Some Friends)

Was nice to see this set in the studio. Nicer, to see new and more varied sculpts rather than just reshashes of the Forge World line. The Death Korps artillery kit in particular is impressive. We magnetized all the weapons. I ordered a kit myself - going to use it with my Steel Legion.

I also need to find where my fully painted Steel Legion army got to. It’s a big studio.

Also featured here is a Baneblade tank magnetized in a way to allow it to be fielded as every variant.

Imperator Titan? Painting a Warbreaker for Adeptus Titanicus

When we were approached to paint the Battle Bling’s ‘Warbreaker Titan’ I almost fell off my chair. We’ve all been waiting for GW to put out an Imperator Titan kit. I figured the Business Gods had just ruled it out as unprofitable.

Then we learned about this model, and were asked to paint it.

It’s huge. Just look at how small it makes the Warlord Titan look! It’s massive too - the arms weighed too much for our puny magnets to hold them in place. Instead, for the photo shoot, we shoved some cardboard inside the joint to create a temporary dry fit.

All the weapons were magnetized as you can see in the pics below.

Warhammer 30k Horus Heresy: Kharn the Bloody and Sevatar - First Captain of the Night Lords, are Nice and Disturbing

I found Forge World’s first releases of Primarchs and character to be disappointing. Just big marines, with their bases decorated with — littler marines. Those early pieces set the tone.

However, looking at Kharn the Bloody and Sevetar - First Captain of the Night Lords, I noticed how the sculptors had done some very clever work.

First off, Sevetar. On his base the dead White Scar’s helmet has been carefully set aside. He holding his real weapons away, as the sculptor is saying “I have set those aside, now look at this!”

The this is a small, elegant knife — clearly a ritual blade. One then notices that the White Scar has been scalped. Given the wide open eyes and screaming mouth; was he scalped while still alive? It is such a narrative rich piece. You have to sit and give it your time to see these things.

Next, consider the big open void under his base, as shown below. The sculptor worked with negative space by literally creating negative space. Enough for a 6mm figure in there (also as shown below). I’ve never seen anyone do that with a base.

Next, Kharn the Bloody. This seems at first a bit of straightforward sculpting. However, in the pictures, you’ll notice there is no clear angle that best shows the narrative. Instead, you need to hold the mini and turn it round and round, looking at. Also, you need to look at it from above. Minis look best when looked at from “mini” height. This one is an exception. It seems designed to be looked at from above, as if by a casual observer.
