Classic L5R: We Painted Legend of the Five Rings

For the longest time, I thought L5R was just a card game. Back in the day, a good friend was the number one player, and they’d fly him to GenCon to participate in tourneys. Painting Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia

Some Frostgrave Miniature Painting Service

Some Frostgrave miniatures. From what I can tell, the designers have made no moves towards digital modeling. This gives their hand-sculpted minis a charming, anachronistic look.

Rumbleslam! Space Kitty Is / Is On Drugs

Conquest The Last Argument of Kings: City States Miniature Painting Service

The more I see of Conquest: Last Argument of Kings, the more I like what I see. The figures are quite large, even compared with GW sculpts. This does make them costlier to work on, but the sculptors make good use of the space. The figures are not overdetailed them, and the designs are cool. Here we did a bunch of their “City States” line.

They’re by Punga Miniatures; as far as I’ve seen Punga make the nicest Blood Bowl teams these days. They all have a bit of humor them. My favorites in this lot were the dancing Slavic-looking dudes.

Some Blue and Red Tau with Cork Basing

We do Tau Kill Teams every so often, but this was the first fair-sized Tau force we’ve done in a while, at above Standard Quality. I feel the red and the blue came together well.

Basing happened at the end, the client opted for a cork base look with some tufts. Basing on a mini is getting a model to wear a formal suit. Makes all the difference.

We Took Our Best Freehand Painting to Lanka Comic Con

We paint minis from all eras and IPs, but we’ve never done anything directly relevant to our history or mythology, as Sri Lankans. This year, we fixed that.

We got hold of some 15mm Classical Indians from Museum Miniatures in the UK. Museum Miniatures is run by an awesome chap named Dave. As far I have been able to tell over the past few years, Dave has been trailblazing 3d design in the generally older, more traditional world of 15mm historical miniatures. Many people aren’t excited about 15mm, historicals in particular, saying that the minis are dated or ugly. Well, you won’t say that after you’ve held one of Dave’s castings in your hand. Their sculpting is as good as the best 28-32mm.

how to paint south asian war ELEPHANTS

Elephants were the centerpieces of ancient South Asian warfare. There is poor data on how they looked in battle, but the clues are all around us in this part of the world. In Sri Lanka, we have elephant parades called peraheras. Here’s one, from last week, where an elephant went on a rampage:

As you can see from the angry megafauna who ought not to stressed out like this, they wear colorful caparisons. Each one has its own colors. It is very reminiscent of the colors of medieval knights. Correlation isn’t evidence, but it does suggest a similar institution. Sri Lankan perahera elephants are usually done in red, blues, and yellows, and so we used those colors for the Sri Lankan elephants.

Similarly, in India, there are elephant festivals as well. There, however, you see much more use of greens, pinks, and purples, and painting done directly on the elephant’s skin. We used these elements to do the opposing army. For Sri Lankans, Indians have been the OPFOR for much of our history, most recently, in a polite invasion in 1987…


a 650 year old temple

For inspiration for the freehand designs, we went to Embakke, a 650 year old temple. Embakke is interesting for two reasons. One, for centuries after, Singhalese Sri Lankan architecture and design have copied from it. Two, there is no repetition of designs at the temple. Between decorations and imagery, there are 514 unique art pieces there. These art pieces we used for inspiration.

Here are the freehand painted designs. Remember, these guys are about one and a half inches tall.

A 32 square Foot Diorama

Can’t have minis without a board. Can’t just be any board; needs to be fancy if its going to our Comic Con. Here’s what we did:

Sisters of Battle: A Novitiate Kill Team

It was quite a bit of good fortune landing this Kill Team commission. The client wanted a conversion done with some Stormcast heads. Further, he had an excellent scheme he wanted us to do. Last, he sent us some lovely and unusual temple bases to work with. Painted up, they are nice contrast with the paint jobs.

Painting Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia

For some approaching geezerhood like me, there’s nothing quite like seeing He-Man minis in the studio… Clash for Eternia has a wide and delightful range of minis. They have a lot of character and dynamic tension in their posing. It’s clear a lot of thought and trouble went into the sculpting.

My favorite is Prince Adam - he looks like he’s grumpy after having just been grounded. It’s impressive how even the ‘static’ characters like him, appear to be in the middle of an active narrative.

Painting the DAK: Deutsche Afrika Korps for Bolt Action

We do a fair bit of historical painting. The brands vary, but Warlord Games Bolt Action is a staple.

Here we got to do paint some Deutsche Afrika Korps (DAK). It’s been MANY years since we had done them last - and the DAK have plenty of variations in their uniforms. We had to do a bit of fresh research, and here’s what we came up with.

Some Blue and Camo Astra Militarum

,

What stood out for me on this Astra Militarum job was that we were not only working with all-new release figures, but also some Victoria Minis substitutes. The client also gave us some nice bases to work with. We played up the red in them to offset the blue in the uniforms.

The new Guard ordnance battery was fun to work with as well. They’ve come a long way!

Ork Goff Rockers on their RokkenRolla!

,

Lucas Como sent us some Goff Rockers - two of the original metal minis, the 2022 Christmas release, and a 3D print. We painted them up for him at Exhibition Quality. That would have been a wrap, but we learned his birthday was coming up.

We then printed up and painted a stage to go with them as a gift. However, Vasanth then made the mistake of showing me a Mad Max-inspired concert-on-wheels. I then spent the weekend crafting a vehicle chassis for the stage, out of drink bottles, lids, and EVA foam.

We matched the “RokkenRolla” to some terrain we did for Lucas.

Now, I just need my own.

Painting an All-Exhibition, Genestealer Cults Army

This project was particularly fun for two reasons. One was the budget; we could go all out, and no mutant was left behind. The other was the color scheme we were asked to match. It was a very colorful, very inventive look. The orange gives it a vibrance on the table we didn’t expect till we saw it taking form.

Painting Chaos Bosses at Exhibition Quality

Usually, when someone asks us to do a single-figure / set-piece character order, we must decline them. Given our low-cost mission, this sort of painting often needs different skills from ours.

This order was a happy exception. The client was looking for the sort of work we do, and he asked us to do 3 lovely, big, Chaos characters. I couldn’t say no, and here are the results.
