Kingdom Death Monster. We see Kingdom Death all the time in the studio. The figures are better, the designs more bold.

Warlord Games - Painting the Afrika Korps from Bolt Action - Warlord Games

DAK are probably my favorite WW2 miniature army. They’ve got a lot of the cool gear; their palette is brighter; and this history of Rommel vs Auchinleck vs Montgomery in the North African theater is always a great read.

These are Warlord Games miniatures. We did them as is, except that they all have new antennae. We 3D designed and printed new ones (with a holder so they didn’t just fall off). Then, wee magnetized them.

Painting Snakebite Orks: Blue and Green Orks, Vehicles, and a Stompa!

We haven’t seen a Stompa in the building in ages. It’s a fantastic kit, and the customer gave us leeway to have a little fun with it. Can you count all the gretchin riding it?

Dragonlance Painting: We Built a Diorama for a Ral Partha Red Dragon of Krynn

Dragonlance was one of those things my parents would never have let me read if they had known what it was about. Not because they had kept up with the Satanic Panic around Dungeons & Dragons. They didn't even know what D&D was. It was because Dragonlance would have seemed obviously too fun.

They were of the opinion that I should be reading Dickens -- the kind of stuff forced on kids by parents who hadn't read Dickens themselves. My sister, who liked Dickens but hated me, encouraged this.

Thus it was that it wasn't till my teen years that I could return to things that were obviously fun. By then though we’d moved back to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka in the 90s was quite the cultural backwater. You couldn’t find Dragonlance in bookstores (though you did find Dickens). I only encountered it when a friend from New Zealand lent a couple of books - and taught me about this thing called Dungeons and Dragons. That was in 1993.

It wasnt until I went to college in the US that I finally came across it again. By then, however, it had already peaked and gone. There were so many other things in those expanding early days of mass Internet access to steal a young person’s attention - like White Wolf games, Shadowrun, and 3rd Edition.

As such, I was surprised and pleased when we were asked to paint a Ral Partha Red Dragon of Kryn for him and put it in a little diorama. Always nice to be asked to work on a piece of the D&D heritage. I'm also always a sucker for a diorama.

Here's the one we put together. The main components were 3D printed. The flames were sculpted, and the acrylic case was put together by hand.

We painted up some Adeptus Titanicus miniatures!

This was a fun little army of Horus Heresy Adeptus Titanicus figures we got to paint. The color schemes were nice and bold. I like how they present as a group. The client picked schemes that gave an even balance of brighter and darker tones. I think this makes for a strong overall composition, both for individual figures and as a force on the table.

Painting Wargames Atlantic's Eisenkern Stormtroopers

If you’ve not looked up Wargames Atlantic, you should. They’ve put out quite a few plastic kits. A bunch are 40k adjacent of course, but they do pretty much everything (I picked up a set of their Napoleonic British Riflemen to make Sharpe and his Chosen Men. If you don’t know who those are, Sean Bean has you covered. You’re welcome!).

Here we got to work on their Eisenkern - Sci-Fi, carapace armored infantry sorts with a lot of nice guns.

The kits are bit subtle - it is VERY easy to overlook details like the sqaud leader head versus the comms officer head… However, they a good kits. They fit together well, and the detail is excellent.

Look into the Madness of Azathoth: Painting Cthulhu Death May Die

When Azathoth wakes, the world - which is all his dream - will end.

Cthulhu Death May Die does some of the nicest eldritch minis you’ll find. Each wave, them seem to get better. My favorites in this one are the Idiot God Azathoth, and ther Tsathoggua.

Azathoth - just look at that. We did the eye-things as Eldar-style gems. The tentacles meet in a central vortex. What is that? The heart of the Universe? An anus? The dreaming god does not tell.

While much more understated, the Tsathoggua is excellent. HPL describes Tsathoggua as perhaps a bat - and perhaps a frog. Every designer who has sat down to do him has had to resolve this. They usually just come down more on side than the other.

What I like about the Cthulhu Death May Die Tsathoggua is that you can’t tell. It is frog-like, bat-like, and neither, at the same time. You can’t really say he’s more one than another. Also, it has eyes everywhere.
