Bloody 40k Chaos Knights!

There is nothing more fun than when a client comes along with a mad idea for a project. The madder, always, the better. What do we do? We aid and abett. Gamers’ wives hate us for a reason! Here you can see why.

The client wanted a very Khornate look. Lots of:

• blood, and freehand bloody lettering

• skulls

• spikes

• gore

• chains

Blood

The blood was straightforward. We used a fair bit of GW’s Blood for the Blood God appropriately enough. For the freehand, we had to practice the font a bit. Once we got the hang of it, we went nuts.

Skulls

We were sent a bunch of skulls, and we 3d printed more. I’m especially fond of the skull shoulder pads. They’re just normal shoulder pads but with skulls slapped on like roof shingles.

Spikes AND GORE

We modeled spikes sticking out of things. For those we used both toothpicks and bamboo skewers. We pulled out a poor fellow from an old Warlord Games infantry sprue and modeled him as a knee guard.

Where there are spikes, there’s gore. The gore was straightforward. It was modeled with green stuff then painted up for the part.

Chain AND MESH

The client sent us some jewellery chain to work with. On these, it looks massive but appropriate. I can’t over that we used it to chain a resin Titan head, to the back of the Acastus.

We used metal mesh from the hardware store to make the barbed wire. It was just a matter of cutting the mesh lengthwise, for each wire strand. Then, we just curled them.

Basing

For the basing, we were asked to match the look here from Dawn of War:

Matching the color was straightforward enough. However, it would have been odd if we kept things so flat. So, we got hold of some crater files, shrunk them down, and printed them. Inside each crater we used green stuff to model the ‘blast lines’ you’ll find in a crater.

More Black Templars

Painting Shadows of Brimstone

The models for Shadows of Brimstone have come so far. I don’t think the sculpting was ever lacking. However, the plastic injection used to be relatively soft detailed. That’s very much a thing of the past now.

Painting Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia

Myself, Kashan, and Vasanth are middle-aged wargamers. Everyone else in the studio is in their 20s and 30s. They are fitter, faster, and healthier than we are… However, we have a perk. That is, when orders like this come up, WE GET TO SHOW THEM HOW MUCH BETTER OUR CARTOONS WERE:

Some Frostgrave Miniature Painting Service

Rumbleslam! Space Kitty Is / Is On Drugs

Not every day you get to paint a bunch of cats. Much less, a space cat.

Some Studio C27 Superheroes we Painted

We recently discovered Studio C27’s line of superhero miniatures. They are up there, as good as or close to as good as what we’ve seen with Marvel Crisis Protocol. This batch came together quite well I feel, if I may say so!

Painting the Witcher: The Old World

Was nice to work on the minis for The Witcher: The Old World. The Witcher-themed monsters were a fun change from the usual. Players of the PC games will appreciate (I am told) the horse on top of the house. I never made it past some buggers living in a river in Witcher 1, so I’ll never know (and I never made it past the tutorial in 3).

Conquest The Last Argument of Kings: City States Miniature Painting Service

The more I see of Conquest: Last Argument of Kings, the more I like what I see. The figures are quite large, even compared with GW sculpts. This does make them costlier to work on, but the sculptors make good use of the space. The figures are not overdetailed them, and the designs are cool. Here we did a bunch of their “City States” line.

We Painted up Some Marvel Zombies

We got paint up another round of Marvel Zombies. The minis have a lot of oomph - nice detail, cool bases, good posing. So, quite a bit to work with. With figures like these, I like to say they ‘paint themselves’. What I mean by this is that it’s hard to go wrong with miniature painting when you’re working with good subject matter.

Grey Knights: NMM-Painted Swords and Broken Glass Bases

This was a fun one. The client wanted us to do an ice effect for the bases. We’ve done snow a million times, but never anything to suggest someone walking over cracking ice. So, did some research and these cool tutorials online:

From there, we did our own thing. For the ice, we found a tip on using tempered glass. Tempered glass is what they use to make phone protectors. You can break it and not cut your fingers on it.

We showed the client both tempered glass and acrylic versions, and he went for the glass:

We also did some oil washes to bring out the detail. This worked quite well on the lettering on the armor.

NMM isn’t part of our normal offerings, but the client asked if we could give him some fancy-looking blades. It was an extra charge, but I think it worked out quite well!

Painting Aeronautica Imperialis

We very rarely get to paint any Aeronautica Imperialis. In fact, this was I believe, only the second time, ever. This is a shame because the minis are awesome. Here we got to work on some Marauder Bombers, Marauder Destroyers, and Thunderbolt Fighters.

I find the design of Imperial flyers a bit curious. At first they appear to have a very World War II feel. However, there is (for their scale) a large, brutishness to them. It makes me think of old Soviet, long range aircraft.

We Just Keep Painting Salamander Space Marines

The third Salamanders army we’ve done, in a row. These have a grimmer, much darker palette. No weathering, but we took the opportunity to bring out some of the more extreme highlights a bit.

Bases left unfinished so the client can finish them up per his own style.

Exhibition-Painted Black Templars!

The more we paint Black Templars, the more I like them. They are much classier than they have any right to be. I suspect it is the combination of the sleek, Primaris ‘tacti-cool’ look, with black, and the red / white offset. It’s like fielding a whole army of Chaplains.

They’re by Punga Miniatures; as far as I’ve seen Punga make the nicest Blood Bowl teams these days. They all have a bit of humor them. My favorites in this lot were the dancing Slavic-looking dudes.

Our First Time Painting Fulgrim Transfigured

Fulgrim was a treat to paint. He’s got a lot of detail and is a well thought-out piece. We went with the official colors which I was also quite pleased with. The purple offsets the gold, and the yellow in the basing. The light wings contrast with the darker lower body. The blue of the hair offsets the red in the tail, both work with the main scheme.

Age of Sigmar: Painting Archaon Everchosen and his Varanguard

It’s not every day you get to do Archaon Everchosen. Indeed, I think this might only be the second time. What stood out though about this time around was his basing. Along with Archaon, we also did a bunch of his Varanguard. They in turn were divided up along each of the Chaos deities.

This gave them unique color schemes, but also unique basing. Our challenge was to fit each style on Archaon’s base. I was worried it would create a hodge-podge look, but it worked out.

Age of Sigmar: Khorne Bloodbound

As far as I can tell, the angriest, reddest, and fightiest of the Khorne-related factions in the Warhammer universe are the Age of Sigmar Khorne Bloodbound. They almost seem a parody of themselves. I’m alright with this; its part of why they have so much character. Every time we do them, I notice something new about the models.

Oil washes helped give these a bit more oomph. Oh, and there’s a mammoth at the end!
