Recently, we've been getting miniatures from a game called Conquest The Last Argument of Kings, by Para Bellum Games.

Painting some Bright Green Warhammer 40k Space Orks

This commission threw us a curve ball. On the face of it, all we had to do was match GW's color scheme for the new, bright green Orks. However, Space Orks have very prominent, well-defined muscles. You cannot just go from a bright skin tone to a darkened, sharp recess without putting some gradations in.

We solve the problem with some glazing. To my aesthetic sense at least, I feel this looks more natural.

Atlantis Miniatures Trolls: Cute, Monstrous, or Both?

We painted some Atlantis Miniatures trolls recently. On the whole, I think they are more cute than menacing. However, they don't look friendly... The posing and sculpting are dynamic, but not overly so, helping to give the suggestion that these are large, heavy creatures. I find them much more compelling than the older (and now small!) Warhammer plastic giant.

Age of Sigmar Miniature Painting Service: Painting Big Black Orruks!

We just finished a bunch of Black Orcs alongside some nice, modern Orruks, painted to match.

There is a fair bit of contrast in these in terms of light and dark. What brings it together the most I feel is the basing. The light sandy terms contrast strongly with the black armor which helps to better frame it.

Painting Aliens and Colonial Marines: Another Day in the Corps

Some Warhammer Underworlds Miniature Painting Service

Mordheim players never had it as good as Warhammer Underworlds players do, when it comes to miniatures (though to be fair, we get Mordheim).

At first, I was surprised that such small squads were getting such unique and character-grade figures. Surely this was excessive? However, against the backdrop of Games Workshop's massive lines, Warhammer Underworlds minis are like bit characters in a school play. They have to step up and give it their all, if they want to be noticed.

The smaller model count also justifies people putting a bit more work into their figures - or dollars into their painting budgets!

We Painted Too Much Battletech!

I have always been intrigued by Battletech. It’s a game that has survived from the era of SSI and FASA, while others like Renegade Legion did not ("what's Renegade Legion?" You ask. Exactly). However, I felt its miniatures let the game down.

The new sculpts however by Catalyst Labs are excellent facelifts. The minis remain about the size of (perhaps generously large) 28mm infantry. However, the level of detail in them exceeds that of a Warmachine Heavy Warjack ("what's Warmachine?" You ask. Exactly). This gives us a great deal of deal to work with. However, it does impact the price quite a bit.

Here is quite a large order of Battletech we painted up. The owner was kind enough to trade some of the miniatures with us! We put them into an opaque bag and each of us drew a figure, one by one. There was some "feeling around for the Madcat" which I declared to be unsporting, but besides that proceedings were civil… We just need to get them painted up and play a game.

Adeptus Mechanicus Painted at Standard Quality

Here are some Adeptus Mechanicus we recently finished at Standard Quality.

The purpose of Standard Quality is to give the client work that:

1- Is comparable with the ‘box art,’ so that they can feel perfectly proud to put on the table in front of complete strangers

2- Goes easy on the wallet.

It tends to get passed over for Showcase and Exhibition but it can hold its own on the gaming table. I only moved away from Standard to Showcase for my own rank and file because I get my painting for free…

Painting Goff Space Orks at Showcase

Not too long ago, Games Workshop used to paint its Orks a dark green. Over time they became brighter, and the newest ones are downright vibrant.

As such, it was a bit of shock for us when we were asked to paint reinforcements for an army we had already worked on years ago. The sample minis were dark! Here are the ones we painted to match them.

The black and white checker patterns were done using transfers.

Getting Your Minis 3D Printed and Painted: Saturnine Terminators

Last month we showed you some miniatures our 3D printing partner had made for us. Now, here are some of them painted.

Saturnine Terminators

Vasanth had been quite impressed with some Saturnine Terminators he saw on a Midwinter Minis episode on YouTube. Seemed only fair than that he get a set of his own!

Not Death Korps

These not-Death-Korps were printed and painted for Paintedfigs alumnus, Pasan. They are ambiguously Steel Legion-looking, which is a plus. The purple headbands and green lenses are a nice touch.

These, along with the terminators, were mounted on some MDF bases we got laser cut by a printing shop across the street.

Blue Space Orks! Painting Heresy…

Here are the new Space Orks - painted blue.

The plastic Kommandos have a ton of character. I can see why GW led with them for the new Kill Team. My favorites on this order though were the squigs. The Squighog Boyz, the Squigosaurs, and the Hunta Rig.

I find I enjoy GW's products the most when they are being ridiculous. The only thing more ridiculous than a Gretchin riding a squig, I suppose, would be a squig riding a Gretchin.

It's only a matter of time.

Painting Steamforged’s Horizon Zero Dawn Board Game

Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn is an excellent console and PC game. It was ported over to a tabletop board game by Steamforged - with some MASSIVE figures. Sure enough, an order came our way.

Here’s how we did them. The detail on the minis are not as crisp as you’ll find in hard plastic kits like GWs, but they get the job done. The amount of detail however, is off the charts.

Painting CMON’s Ankh Board Game

Whenever we get asked if we could paint Ankh, I say that while it's quite expensive, they can always sell the figures later to raise money for college for their kids… Ankh is a CMON board game. Like many boardgames from CMON, it comes with a great deal of miniatures. Also characteristic of CMON games, the sculpting is fantastic.

Heavy Weathering: Oil Washes, Oil Splashes, and Weathering Pigment

We tend to go easy on weathering because it is a stage that cannot be reversed. Always better to apply a light touch, and add more if the client likes. The drawback to this approach, however, is that we don't get to cut loose and really make things dirty!

With these terrain pieces from the Octarius set, we got free reign from Lucas to go nuts. It is yet unclear how he feels about the results…

Oil Washes

Oil washes are a straightforward, and an easy way to give terrain a sense of depth and age. The more tones used, the better.

We laid it on thick with these. We also blended the colors we used for the washes. You’ll notice, for example, places where a blue verdigris effect meets and merges with a rusty brown look. I cannot tell you easy it is to blend with oils - I can see why they are all the rage now.

Oil Splashes!

Quite by accident, I splashed a bit of green oil wash right in the middle of an area that was blue. The two colors immediately began to blend. I loved what I saw, and splashed on a fair bit more. You can see the results on the platform here.

Weathering Pigment; Vallejo, and Tumeric Spice 

Once the figures were dry, we hit them with some Vallejo weathering pigment. The results were alright, but the colors I felt were a bit flat.

So, we got some Tumeric from the grocery store and mixed it in. That nice, bright, yellow dust you see? That's meant for flavoring your food.

We sealed the Vallejo/spice pigment afterwards with a blast of sealant.

Summary

The techniques we used here are of limited value on infantry figures, but stand out especially on large miniatures or terrain pieces. I'm scratch building an Ork Gargant and I can’t wait to use these tricks on it.

Journeys Into Middle Earth - Miniature Painting Service

Here is a Journeys Into Middle Earth set that we painted a couple of weeks ago

There is an innocence, if I can use the word, to these sculpts. The figures don't have the brutality of the Games Workshop ones. Instead, they feel more like the kind of monsters one would find in a children's book. A creepy children's book that will be remembered well into adulthood, but those are the best one.

Much respect to the designers for doing their own thing and not just replicating the vision from the movies.

Sri Lankan Protests, 3D Printing Armies, and Terrain for Sale

Economic Protests in Sri Lanka

Thank you to everyone who was written to ask how we are! We are all safe and well.

For those who don’t know, Sri Lanka is going through hard times. They will get worse before IMF reforms begin. However, there were clear warning signs this was coming, and for some time. Many businesses used this time to prepare.

The studio has a 6 months consumables reserve as a buffer against supply chain problems. Our sales are international, so the local downturn doesn’t affect us. The team is also paid against the dollar; this protects them against inflation. Of course, we still run into outlier problems. We manage them as they come.

Overall, I am optimistic. It is at a high cost to the country, but we are getting rid of the most corrupt of our politicians.

3D Printing Your Armies

We have teamed up with an excellent 3D printing outfit on this end. Here are some miniatures, mainly from One Page Rules, which we asked them to print. We undercoated them to better show their detail:

The pricing on these ranged from $3.25 from single-piece prints, to $8.00 for the multi-part terminators. The fewer parts a figure had, the less expensive it was to print.

We Painted Too Much Blood Bowl!

If there is such a thing as too much Blood Bowl, this must be it. We had the good fortune to land this giant Blood Bowl miniature painting commission.

My favorites are the Snotlings. I have a set of my own I bought just to get the pump wagons (it is the best deal on GW wagons you will find anywhere). That aside, I expect we will be playing Blood Bowl, and Blitz Bowl, soon.

A Few Soulblight Gravelords

This was part of a skirmish commission. There’s only a few shots to show, but I felt the figures stood out so much I felt we had to blog about them. GW vampires have never looked this good.

One isn’t a vampire at all, however. One is Yvraine, Emissary of Ynnead, but without her headdress and cat.
